Over the next few weeks, crowds will gathered at city centres across the country to see the Christmas lights being turned on. There will be the great countdown as the crowds shouted out “10, 9, 8, 7 etc,” and then someone will push the button and suddenly the city will be illuminated and the people shouting, “THE LIGHTS ARE ON!”

Swansea will be one of those cities! – One minute our city looks as it does every other day of the year, and then suddenly it will be lit up. The city will dazzle with the array of colours, with lights flashing and Christmas music blearing through our streets.

Just over 2,000 years ago, planet earth was rather dull and dim. Then suddenly there was I would imagine some kind of a countdown in heaven. In my imagination I can hear the hosts of heaven shouting: “10, 9, 8, 7, etc” and then came the loud cry from the angels: “THE LIGHTS ARE ON!”

The trumpets were blasting, the choir of heaven singing with delight: “Joy to the world! The Lord is come; Let earth receive her King” and there was a star dazzling above Bethlehem. “THE LIGHT IS ON!”

Just as there will be an appointed time for the lights to be switched on in our city, a time which has been planned in advance, so there was an appointed time for the light to be switched on here on planet earth, a time appointed before time began. Paul has this to say in Galatians 4:4-5: “But when the time was right, God sent his Son, and a woman gave birth to him. His Son obeyed the Law, so he could set us free from the Law, and we could become God’s children.” (CEV)
Christmas is fast approaching, our homes will be decorated with lights and no matter how the world may celebrate Christmas, the real reason for the festival is the fact that: ‘the light came on some 2,000 years ago.’

I pray that this Christmas the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ will shine brightly as Christians worldwide will celebrate the birth of the Saviour of the world.
“Jesus, Light of the World, shine upon us,
Set us free by the truth You now bring us,
Shine on me. Shine on me.”
